In the Hindu scriptures, Shani is worshiped as cause of prosperity and happiness. In a similar fashion, he is also worshipped for bringing misfortune and destruction. In fact, some consider Shani to be one of the most powerful planetary deities in Hinduism. He is known to grow larger while dropping smaller planets from orbit while making their descendents go through severe annihilation. Despite his erratic nature, he has been a widely worshipped deity in India since ancient times. It is believed that the worship of Shani began in the Gupta Empire (320-480 CE) but some records exist of him being worshiped during the period of Ramayana and Mahabharata. The significant growth of this worship did start in Gupta Empire. It is believed that Shani was initially regarded as an aspect of Shiva (Sanskrit: शनि). Someshwar (son of Shiva) was known to be the son of Shani, but later on he became his separate entity. The word "Shanidev" means Lord or God of Shani. He is one among the most popular Hindu deities worshipped today by large numbers in western India. The meanings of Shanidev and Shani are the same. Shani has a very large number of temples all over India, particularly in southern, western and central India. The most prominent temples are located at Nashik, Palitana (Gujarat), Kolhapur, Shani Shingnapur (Maharashtra) and Mangalvedhe (Goa). In Goa there is a famous temple of Shani Dev which is situated in the heart of the city, hence this "Sant Sanket" is the guardian deity of the city. The temples of Shani Dev and Shani Dedhe (Lord of Sanketan) are situated in the same complex near the market. There is a temple complex, which is located in Tarlokpur-Dhar district of Punjab. There are 28 temples in the complex dedicated to Lord Shani and Lord Surya. The most famous of these temples is that dedicated to Lord Shiva's consort Parvati, Mata Parvati, who is also worshipped as Durga goddess at this temple. The meaning "Satar dhara" means lord of dhara (the seventh lunar orbit). It represents Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The main deity here is the lord Shani. The seventh orbit is called Dhara in Hindu mythology. Shani Dev temple in Bangladesh, situated in Thakurgaon District, was built during the reign of Siddi Syed Ahmed Shahi, the 5th Nawab of Bengal.
